The collection depicts the individual African American scientists and physicians selected by pharmaceutical maker CIBA-GEIGY Corporation as significant contributors to their respective fields from 1980 to 1985. Much of the collection is only available as color slides, as well as some contact sheets. A limited number of images date from the late-1970s and the late-1980s.The collection consists of individual portraits and candid shots of the honorees; views of painter Ernest Crichlow who was commissioned to do portraits of the honorees; photographic reproductions of Crichlow's portraits and the posters used to publicize the honorees' achievements; views of portrait presentations to the honorees; and views of Exceptional Black Scientists poster displays and exhibits at conventions, receptions and high school programs.The scientists and physicians selected by CIBA-GEIGY were Percy L. Julian, Charles Drew and Jane C. Wright (1980); W. Montague Cobb, Shirley A. Jackson and Ernest Everett Just (1981); Jewell Plummer Cobb, Lloyd N. Ferguson and Augustus A. Wright III (1982); Samuel Lee Kountz, Jennie R. Patrick and David Blackwell (1983); and LaSalle D. Leffall, Reatha Clark King and Walter E. Massey (1984).
