Portrait drawings and caricatures showing persons depicted smoking

Collection Data

Description
Portraits and caricatures of L. Frank Baum, Joseph Chamberlain, Rudyard Kipling, Sammy Lee, Arthur Machen, Lord Queensberry, George Bernard Shaw (as a capitalist), Mark Twain, George Manker Watters, and a military officer identified only as Backie. Sketches by Phil May appear to be self-portraits, and have titles such as A young sport, and A young Jew smoking a large pipe. A sketch of L. Frank Baum is included on a sheet of orignal drawings of children at play for his book Father Goose. One drawing is titled Schoolboy of the Stalky period and is presumably Rudyard Kipling. Persons are depicted smoking cigars, cigarettes or pipes.
