Content: The publisher, Alexandre Dumas Delany, was the son of the author, Martin Delany, a noted African-American abolitionist, physician, newspaper editor and soldier. Delany Sr. was one of the first African Americans admitted to Harvard Medical School, and served during the Civil War as a major in the 104th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops.
Ownership: Copy in Sc Rare 366-D (accession no. B541897) recto of upper wrapper inscribed: "Compliments of A.D. Delany New York City." ; With embossed stamp on title page: "Negro Society for Historical Research, Yonkers, N.Y. 1911." Numerous corrections and annotations throughout ; This copy is part of the original collection purchased from Arthur A. Schomburg in 1926. NN
