Includes four lines of verses, reading from left to right: Originale dans ma danse / Je puis le disputer aux Balons, aux Blondis, / Fidele aux loix de la Cadence / Je forme, au gré de l'art, les pas les plus hardis.
Biographical/historical: Although the printmaker has not been identified, this image closely follows Nicolas Lancret's oil painting, dated 1730, in the Wallace Collection, London, which is thought to be the earliest of Lancret's portrayals of Camargo. The verses below the painting are also seen on two other prints of this image, though the order of the lines is different, reading: Fidele aux loix de la Cadence / Je forme, au gré de l'art, les pas les plus hardis; / Originale dans ma danse / Je puis le disputer aux Balons, aux Blondis. These verses, along with a lengthier poem in English, appear on a similar engraving by Garnier, held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and on Laurent Cars's engraving, which reverses the image so that Camargo gazes toward her right. The names Balon and Blondi in the poem refer to two male dancers who were Camargo's contemporaries, Jean Balon and Beauchamp Blondi.

Description
Depiction of the French ballerina Marie Camargo dancing in a sylvan landscape. A musician stands at her right; four more musicians and two onlookers (among them the only other woman besides the dancer) are ranged on lower ground at her left. Camargo is poised on her right foot, with her left foot slightly elevated; her gaze is directed to her left. She wears the shortened skirts that she introduced to display the brilliance of her footwork.
