Interview with Lucy Kroll conducted by Agnes de Mille on May 10, 1985, as part of her research for her biography of Martha Graham entitled Martha: The Life and Work of Martha Graham- A Biography (1991). Streaming audio file (approximately 39 minutes). Lucy Kroll speaks with Agnes de Mille about Martha Graham, Kroll's former husband Nathan Kroll, and the making of the [1957] film entitled A dancer's world; Lee [LeRoy] Leatherman and his book on Graham entitled Martha Graham: Portrait of an artist (1967); Ron Protas; Kroll's recordings of conversations with Graham, now held by the Library of Congress; Graham's stenographic notebooks and their transformation into a book [The notebooks of Martha Graham, 1973]; more on Ron Protas and his increasing influence on Graham; Graham's work Judith and its poor reception in the United Kingdom; Robin [Jared Stanley Howard] and his first meeting with Graham; Bethsabée de Rothschild; Graham's reluctance to retire from dancing including her need for the audience; Graham's use of the spoken or singing voice in her works; more on Protas and his influence on Graham.
