Biographical/historical: Théodore Maurisset, active from 1834 to 1859, was a Parisian painter, printmaker, and caricaturist.

Description
Caricature of ballroom dancers, most of them arranged in an s-shaped formation. Each couple is labeled with an identifying quality, exaggerated for comic effect. They are, from top right: Les invisibles, Les microscopiques, Les naïfs, Les décédés, Les apoplectiques, Les gigantesques, Les grotesques, Les vénérables, Les étiques, Les fantastiques, Les décharnés, Les infatigables, Les pincés, Les tortillés, Les étiolés, Les éxaltés, Les maniérés, Les modérés, Les ennuyés, Les stationnaires, Les flegmatiques, Les inspirés, Les effrayés [two couples], Les ecrasés, Les extravagants, Les passionnés, Les échevelés, Les éxagerés, Les furieux, Les frénétiques. Positioned outside the formation at left are: Les empoignes [two couples]; at right, Les dégouttés, Les contrariés. Very likely some if not all of these characteristics could have been observed in the ballrooms of nineteenth-century France.
