Charles Robert Darwin (1809 - 1882) was an English naturalist, and the first scientist to publish on the evolution of species by means of natural selection. Inspired by research undertaken whilst circumnavigating the globe as ship's naturalist on the HMS Beagle, 1837 - 1839, Darwin finally published his theories in his seminal work, On the Origin of Species, in 1859.
