- Description
- Isaac Goldberg (1887-1938) was an American author, critic and editor. He was literary editor at the American Freeman from 1923 to 1932 and music reviewer for American Mercury from 1930 to 1932. He also was a founder and editor of Panorama and an editor of The Reviewer. His works included biographies, books on literature and the theatre, and translations of novels, plays and criticism from Yiddish as well as major European languages. Collection consists of correspondence, typescripts, research notes, student notebooks, photographs, and clippings. Correspondence, ca. 1919-ca. 1936, is with writers, critics, publishers, producers, scholars, and editors. Also, typescripts of books and articles by Goldberg and others, research notes and associated materials relating to the subjects of Goldberg's biographies, student notebooks he kept at Harvard, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

- Biographical/historical: The American author, critic, and editor, Isaac Goldberg, was born in Boston in 1887, and died in Brookline, Mass. in 1938. He received a PhD from Harvard in 1912, and was a special lecturer there in Hispano-American literature in 1931 and 1932. During the years 1923-1932 he was the literary editor of the American Freeman and in 1930-1932 he reviewed music and books on music for American Mercury. He also was a founder and editor of Panorama and an editor of The Reviewer. Among his published books are, "A Study in Modern Spanish Literature, ''The Theatre of George Jean Nathan, and biographies of Havelock Ellis, H. L. Mencken, and William S. Gilbert. He also translated novels, plays, and criticism from Yiddish, and the major European languages.

There are also typescripts of "The Spirit of Yiddish Literature and other books and articles by Goldberg, typescripts of writings by others, research notes and associated material relating to the subjects of Goldberg's biographies, notebooks kept by Goldberg at Harvard, a few photographs, and newspaper clippings.
