Born Gertrude Louise Garrigus, Jean Garrigue (1914 - 1972) was an American poet. Widely acclaimed during her lifetime, she seemingly dropped into obscurity after her death. Garrigue lived for many years in New York City, where she worked as an editor and taught writing at institutions including Bard College, Queen’s College, and the New School, among others. Garrigue also received fellowships from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations, the Radcliffe Institute, and the National Academy of Arts and Letters. During her lifetime she published five collections of poetry, one novella, and a critical work on the poet Marianne Moore. Two further collections of Garrigue's poetry were published posthumously.
