Collection consists of original and photographic reproductions of covers of African American magazines; reproductions of magazine illustrations; and reproductions of either complete or portions of front pages, mastheads and articles from anti-slavery and African American newspapers, from the 1820s to the 1960s. The collection includes covers (1911-1920s) from The Crisis, The Messenger, and Opportunity magazine; reproductions of illustrations and a political cartoon from The Messenger (ca. 1920s); reproductions of mastheads, front pages, and articles from various anti-slavery newspapers (1820s-1850s); reproductions of front pages and articles from Reconstruction-era to early 20th century newspapers (1870-1930), including the New York Age; and a photograph of two servicemen and a civilian war effort volunteer posing with a copy of The Crisis (ca. 1940s).
