Description
Print depicts an eyewitness identification proceeding in the Prison de la Santé in Paris following the unrest of August 20, 1899 in which 27 anarchist leaders and sympathizers were arrested on a slate of riot-related charges. At left is the police commissary M. Gouliet who was stabbed during the disturbance. The witnesses and accused are examined by M de Valles, seated, the magistrate in charge of the investigation. At center is the anarchist leader Sebastian Faure, who congratulates the commissary on his courage. Some of the 80 witnesses from the Paris Gendarmerie stand to the side.
