Illustration for Following the Equator. Ch. XXI, p. 208. Reduced to miniature in published text. Shows white man in pith helmet smoking cigarette and holding revolver, offering an Australian aboriginal a large tray or shield on which are piled a scourge, manacles, tobacco, whiskey, disease, and a gallows; the aboriginal is holding boomerang, and looking at the offering with anger and disdain.
