Notes
Citation/reference: Islamic Manuscripts in the New York Public Library, (ed.) Barbara Schmitz (NYPL / Oxford University Press, 1992), pages 114-115.
Statement of responsibility: Jāmī.
Content: Ms. codex
Content: Text copied before 1555, miniatures probably inserted around 1570.
Content: Physical description : dark cream, gold-sprinkled paper inserted in lighter cream margins. 143 folios, the first folio unnumberd and folio 130 omitted. 15 lines. 2 columns. Black, gold, blue, red and jade rulings, with outer rulings in blue. The frontal panel (sarlawh, fols. 1b-2a) and the 6 miniatures were later pasted into the manuscript and have larger ruled areas than the text pages. The last page (fol. 143b) contains a short colophon saying that the book was copied for the Mughal prince Kāmrān son of Bābur (d. 1555) by ʻAbd Allāh Shirāzī. Underneath the colophone band is the seal of the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān (r. 1628-1657) and a librarian's note that the book entered the Royal Treasury on 10 Urdibihisht, the tenth year of the Emperor's reign.
Content: According to Schmitz, "the copyist is not a master calligrapher and it is possible that the colophon is fraudulent".
Preferred citation: NYPL. Spencer Collection Pers. ms. 64
Funding: Preservation and access were made possible by the generous support of Mahnaz Ispahani Bartos and Adam Bartos.
Language: Persian; Nastaʻlīq script.
Ownership: "Purchased in London, 1985" --- Schmitz, 114.
Statement of responsibility: جامى.
