Physical Description
Extent: 1 skirt : Cotton, green and white ; 77 x 67 cm + 1 bodice (Cotton, green and off-white ; 42 x 102 cm)
Description
Late American 19th-century style, forest green calico skirt printed with small floral designs. Unlined, heavily gathered and secured with twill tape, top-stitched onto the skirt with a muslin strip on the interior. Black eyes are sewn onto the waist to secure the bodice, though several are missing. The center-back closure consists of a hook-and-bar at the waist, along with black snaps at the opening. A layered white muslin petticoat, featuring openwork and whitework embroidery, is heavily gathered and secured to the skirt. Ruffled and embroidered bloomers are attached to the petticoat. Matching bodice with three-quarter sleeves, each featuring a slightly gathered cap. The center-front closure has seven of the original eight black buttons. Black hooks secure the bodice to the skirt. The bodice is labeled "DEMIL."
