Description
Playwright Migdalia Cruz discusses her life and work with Ramón Espejo. Born and raised in the South Bronx, Cruz wrote her first play at age 6 for a cast of puppets, on the theme of Civil Rights. Her neighborhood was violent, and her early years were difficult. She continued to write, pursued playwriting in college, and studied with María Irene Fornés. Cruz lived in Chicago for several years, where a number of her plays were produced. Among other topics, she discusses her experiences in theater, the differences she perceives between producing plays in Chicago and New York, and the critical reception to her work, in particular her play Welcome back to Salamanca. She also emphasizes the importance for writers of travel and a knowledge of history.
